They decided to implement this system of polders, which are flat areas, flat and low areas protected by dikes.
So they built a system of dikes protecting the low areas of this flooding problems, and also a system of pumping stations that could drain these low areas to the other side, to the lake.
Without the pumping stations, we wouldn’t be able to take out the water from the flat areas.
