Something is happening

Interview with Bente Lorentzen in Svolvær, association Folkeaksjonen, Svolvær, 2015

It’s called “varde” in Norwegian, this traditional fire that you make to say that something is happening. Like the really old traditional… when you light a fire on the top of a mountain, so that neighbour communities could see it, in order to say something is up, in a way. This we do every year, and it’s kind of a notion saying that the fight isn’t over, in a way, we still have to continue to work for keeping this area free.
In the east of Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja, we’ve always managed to protest before the national government has started the process. Instead of protesting when it’s already been decided. And that’s really important.
