Integrated ocean governance

Interview with Gunnar Sander, Polar Institute, Tromsø

The idea is that you should try to take all the human activities into account and see how they affect not only the most valued parts necessarily but the whole ecosystem. And try to take that into account when you build up measurement strategies, to say it very simply. So there is if you like a two-fold process where you must assess the cumulative impacts on the ecosystem, and later you must designate policies to address your findings. And well, this has long roots, but you can say that the concept matured in the 1990s. And Norway was one of the countries that nationally had subscribed to it. So what started in the Lofoten and the Barents sea, that was the first region, ocean-region that was created, for making this work in Norway.
